The number of hair transplant sessions increased by 73 percent during 2013-2015 in Athens-based Advanced Hair Clinics, a privately held center specializing in hair restoration. This increase occurred despite capital controls, a drop in hair transplant procedures by 14 percent in Europe during 2012-2014 and a dramatic 50 percent unemployment rate amongst young people.
What seems to work with the hair business in Greece is the combination of high expertise and low cost services. Greek plastic surgeon Dr. Anastasios Vekris, medical director of the clinic, says, “Medical tourism in Greece combines services of very high quality with low prices, compared to northern Europe and the U.S. At the same time, a foreigner may enjoy his stay in Athens sightseeing or take some time to travel to a Greek island.” As the doctor admits, “about 3 out of 10 of the patients are foreigners.
Most of them come from the Middle East, central and northern Europe, and mainly the U.K., but this year we also performed on people coming from as far as the U.S., Canada and Panama.”
One of the VIP foreigners who got their hair restoration in Athens is Diego Martin Perez, deputy head of Mission & Consul in the embassy of Uruguay in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He received a hair transplant with the FUE technique, the minimally invasive and the most modern one, leaving no scars behind. Hair grafts are extracted and implanted one by one, under local anesthesia, aiming at a natural result. However, few doctors worldwide know how to perform this, which is why this treatment is promoted by Dr Vekris.
“I had some discomfort during the first night and the first two days after the procedure but, after one week the head looked normal again,” Diego remembers.
During one of his visits, he went on a holiday for four weeks before the transplant and spent his time between Mykonos and Santorini islands and then three days in Athens.
Now he has all of his head covered. But the most important thing of all is that he got back his self-confidence.
