Medical Travel Today (MTT): Give our readers some background on your professional experience. David Fetterolf (DF): I have 22 years of experience working for healthcare information technology and service companies. Prior to joining Stratus Video, I served as president and founder of MDeverywhere. MDeverywhere provided revenue cycle management software and services to medical practices and hospitals. Under my leadership, MDeverywhere grew to be one of the largest companies in the market with over 3,500 physicians using the MDeverywhere solution. In 2011, MDeverywhere was inducted into the Inc. 500 | | 5000 fastest growing companies. Prior to MDeverywhere, I was the president of Datamedic’s physician office division. Datamedic was a leading provider of computer-based patient records and business management software and services for medical practices and clinics. MTT: What is Stratus Video’s overall objective and how does it differ from its competitors? DF: Stratus Video’s objective is to be the primary video remote interpretation provider in our nation’s hospitals, and we’re well on our way with over 600 domestic healthcare clients. Our system is unique for several reasons: 1) Stratus functions as an application that can be loaded onto any PC, tablet or smartphone. It works over Wi-Fi and 4G. 2) Our interpreters are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year – and answer all on-demand calls in 30 seconds or less. 3) We only charge clients by the minute for the minutes they use. Our clients have reported savings from anywhere between 30 – 70 percent. 4) All of our interpreters are highly experienced and medically qualified. We complete intense in-house training, as well. MTT: Is Stratus Video directly involved in the medical travel? DF: We are not directly involved in the medical travel industry, but as our clients become more involved in the space, our interpreters will start taking calls from medical travelers looking for quality interpretive services. MTT: How has your company helped to alleviate challenges that exist for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients in the healthcare and medical travel spaces? DF: Medical travel is a huge industry. Here in Florida a grant was just awarded to local healthcare institutions to market themselves as medical travel destinations. Any institution taking advantage of the grant that was awarded should be utilizing Stratus Video’s services to communicate with foreign language-speaking patients that they may bring in. For example, if a hospital uses Stratus Video, that means they have immediate access to interpreters in over 200 languages, 24 hours a day. Patients no longer have to suffer while they wait for onsite interpreters to arrive. Hospitals no longer have to pay tremendous visitation fees when an unexpected language barrier occurs. Stratus Video makes communication quick, easy and efficient. MTT: Why is Florida in particular affected by medical travel, and what can other states do to follow the state’s lead? DF: Florida is a tourist destination on its own with its desirable weather, beaches and state parks. Additionally, the state has a strong healthcare industry. It makes sense that patients electing to travel for care would choose a destination that excels in landscape and medical resources. Other states can follow Florida’s lead by securing marketing grants, similar to the grant Florida has in place. MTT: At this point, is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? DF: Language access is not only helpful, but it’s required by law. Not many people realize that if a medical institution is receiving federal funding (which includes Medicare/Medicaid), then they are required under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to not discriminate based on ethnicity, country of origin, or primary language. Interpretive services are a requirement, and Stratus Video helps healthcare institutions fulfill that requirement without breaking the bank.
